According to research from Barclays, Italy is the fourth most popular destination for UK buyers, but the Calabria region isn’t necessarily where they think of when they plan their holiday or decide to buy in Italy.
Many don’t see further than Tuscany, but the Tuscan bandwagon has already departed and those who didn’t reserve a seat some years ago have left it a bit late to get onboard now. The UK developed a love affair with the idyllic Tuscan landscape and anybody visiting the region will understand why, but it had the inevitable result. Prices rocketed, which has been great for those who bought at the right time but not so good for the rest of us.
But how many of those longing to live in Italy and set their hearts on Tuscany have visited other regions to see what they have to offer, notably Calabria? It lies on the ‘toe’ of Italy but is easily accessed and some airlines now fly direct to airports in the region and more will follow due to Calabria’s growing popularity. A good sign in any overseas market is that the locals holiday there too and Italians have been enjoying Calabria for generations. But it only began to attract increasing numbers of foreigners quite recently and once discovered, many return again and again.
Calabria has a distinct feel unlike anywhere else in Italy, with a balmy climate, some of the best sandy beaches and the typically relaxed Italian lifestyle we associate with living in that country. In fact, if the prime attraction of Italy is the lifestyle then Calabria ticks every box. In addition, it offers both beach and mountains and the skiing is growing in popularity.
This is the time to buy in Calabria, while the region is still, to use the well-worn phrase so beloved of estate agents, up and coming. If buyers want Italy they need to go and look at Calabria and jump onboard before this becomes the next bandwagon long since departed along with all the property bargains
